Drs. Stephen Kemble and Kuo-Chiang Lian, Dawn Harflinger Join UHA Board of Directors

Honolulu, HI (Feb. 23, 2024) – UHA Health Insurance is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Kemble, M.D., Kuo-Chiang Lian, M.D. and Dawn Harflinger to its Board of Directors.

They join a Board of Directors led by Chairperson Howard Todo. Other board members include Bryan Andaya, director, ES&A, A Law Firm, and president, Andaya Consulting; Art Gladstone, executive vice president and chief strategy officer, Hawai‘i Pacific Health; Meli James, president, Hawai‘i Venture Capital Association and co-founder, Mana Up; Byron Yoshino, president and CEO, Pharmacare Hawai‘i; and Lena Young, formerly of JTB Hawai‘i. Howard Lee, president & CEO of UHA, also serves as a director.

Dr. Stephen Kemble
Dr. Kemble recently retired from providing psychiatric patient care and teaching for internal medicine residents on management of psychiatric problems in primary care in the Queen Emma Clinics at The Queen’s Medical Center. He has been an assistant clinical professor of medicine and psychiatry at the John A. Burns School of Medicine for 35 years.

Dr. Kemble previously served on the UHA Board of Directors from 2008 to 2011. From 2003 to 2022, he also volunteered on the UHA Physician Advisory Council, whose members are participating providers.

The longtime Hawai‘i healthcare provider has been a licensed physician here for nearly 50 years and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

A Makiki resident, Dr. Kemble is a dedicated volunteer for local and national public services organizations and professional societies including the Hawai‘i Medical Association and Hawai‘i Psychiatric Medical Association. He is also a widely published author and expert presenter to local and national groups.

Dr. Kuo-Chiang Lian
Dr. Lian is the chief of medicine and a hospitalist physician at The Queen’s Medical Center. He also serves as an assistant professor of medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, where he has twice won the Internal Medicine Residency Program Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching.

He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Dr. Lian currently serves as chair of the all-volunteer UHA Physician Advisory Council. The Kaimuki resident is also an expert presenter to local and national medical and health groups.

Dawn Harflinger
Ms. Harflinger is president and CEO of Lili‘uokalani Trust, founded by Queen Lili‘uokalani. The private foundation oversees a globally positioned investment fund and Hawai‘i real-estate portfolio of some 6,200 acres that funds a wide array of healing services to orphans and other needy children in Hawai‘i. A longtime employee of the foundation, she has served as its chief financial officer, chief investment officer and investment director.

An involved community member, Ms. Harflinger’s current and past affiliations include the Waikīkī Improvement Association, Urban Land Institute and Waikīkī Surf Club.

Ms. Harflinger is also a prominent speaker who presents on a wide variety of topics from finance and development to empowerment.
