(HONOLULU, September 11, 2007)--With the first outbreak of influenza now confirmed in Hawaii, UHA health plan members can get free flu shots to protect them against the disease this flu season.
UHA members 18 years and older covered under any UHA plan can go to a participating Longs Drugs store to get vaccinated against the flu. No appointment is necessary, and there is no charge for immunization. To find a participating Longs Drugs Store and the vaccination schedule at each store, UHA members can check the UHA website at www.uhahealth.com, or call 532-4000. This cooperative immunization program between UHA and Longs begins September 29.
While the flu has been relatively mild in Hawaii the past few years, "there's no way to predict that trend will continue. The single best way to protect against the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control, is to get vaccinated," said Dr. Max G. Botticelli, UHA's Chief Executive Officer. "That's why we urge our members to go to Longs, take advantage of the free flu shots, and stay healthy this year."
Every year, influenza causes about 36,000 deaths, and hospitalizes more than 200,000 persons nationwide. Hawaii's first confirmed outbreak of influenza in Hawaii in 2007 was reported last month, and occurred unusually early. Most flu cases happen in the Fall and Winter.
A very small number of people should not receive the flu vaccine, such as those who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs. UHA Members should check with their physician if they are concerned about whether their individual condition means they should not be vaccinated.
